Azeitão is composed of four parishes: Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, Brejos de Azeitão, Vendas de Azeitão, and Vila Fresca de Azeitão. They share the name “Azeitão” due to the extensive olive groves that dominated the area during the Arab period.

In Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, there are several estates, some dedicated to wine production, cheese making, and the famous local sweets, such as the "Tortas de Azeitão" and "esses" biscuits. Many of these estates belong to wealthy individuals and celebrities, such as Herman José, Manuel Vilarinho, and coach José Mourinho.

In 2014, Azeitão cheese was considered one of the 50 best gastronomic products in the world, awarded by the Great Taste Awards, organized by the Guild of Fine Food (Ireland), also known as the Oscars of gastronomy. In June 2015, a museum was inaugurated to honor the shepherds and the Azeitão cheese: the Museu do Ovelheiro.

Today, Azeitão is an area of vineyards and pastures, famous for its excellent grilled fish restaurants, its renowned still and fortified wines, Azeitão cheese, and its traditional sweets, especially the iconic Tortas de Azeitão and the "S"-shaped biscuits.
